What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is a common complication amongst many runners, but this condition can also affect anyone.

Plantar fasciitis proceeds by affecting your lower foot area, more specifically, the tissue that connects your heel and proceeds to your toes.

If this connective tissue is strained and constantly used, this area can weaken and over time, become inflamed.

This will result in chronic foot pain when you walk or even stand, so you will need to seek professional assistance as this form of pain should not be ignored.

Signs and symptoms

You should familiarise yourself of the signs of plantar fasciitis and we have produced a list of symptoms and signs that will aid your mindset.

  • When you touch the heel of your foot, you feel chronic pain and it feels tender to the touch.
  • You feel pain in the arch of your foot
  • Your foot feels quite stiff and not moving in a natural state
  • You have discomfort when you rise from sitting or lying down
  • Sharp and aching tendencies shoot up through from the ball of your foot to the tip of your toes.

Causes

There are many actions that could cause you to acquire plantar fasciitis.

We find that the main causes through our clinic are due to a change of distance when running or jogging but it can also affect aspects such as a persons age, weight and standing for long periods of time.

Another condition is if you are wearing shoes that are not fitted correctly to the size of your foot.

This can not only cause plantar fasciitis but can affect the shape and strength of your foot in the long-term.

If you are feeling tightness along with your hamstrings, calf muscles or the Achilles tendon (at the back of your ankle) then you are at risk of plantar fasciitis.

When it comes to the tightness of your muscles, you must be aware of the risks as continuous tightness could lead to detrimental results long-term involving areas such as tissue within the bone and your ligaments.
